Training in creation through creation

ésam Caen/Cherbourg is a school of all possibilities, from discovery to plastic experimentation, from initiation to mastery of techniques, from reflection to understanding the challenges of contemporary art. Open to the world, today's creators are also invited to invent the forms and professions of tomorrow.

Studies at ésam Caen/Cherbourg are characterized by a global approach to art and design. This approach emphasizes the articulation between theory and practice on the one hand, and between creation and technique on the other. Cross-disciplinarity, interdisciplinarity and experimentation allow for the validation of specific skills as well as a great capacity for creation and adaptation after school.

Diplomas

The training is organized in three successive cycles of study sanctioned by diplomas which, through the implementation of a project-based pedagogy, progressively place the students' personal project at the heart of their training :

The National Diploma of Art (Bachelor degree)
The first cycle of studies, lasting three years, gives students the fundamental theoretical and technical tools of artistic practice and leads them to the discovery and development of their personal work. Our two diplomas are :

DNA in Art
DNA in Graphic Design

After a first year of strong immersion and discovery common to all students of the school, the entry in the second year is marked by the choice of the option : Art or Graphic Design. In the 3rd year, the process of elaboration, defense and presentation of the diploma begins, allowing the implementation of an autonomous methodology that aims to develop a singular work.

The National Superior Diploma of Plastic Expression (Master degree)
The second cycle, which lasts two years after obtaining the DNA, is essentially devoted to the preparation of the diploma. Before entering the 4th year, students choose one of the Master's degree courses offered by the school :

DNSEP in Art with a major in Art
DNSEP in Art, Creation in a Digital Environment
DNSEP in Design with a specialization in Editions
DNSEP in Design, Creation & Territorial Projects.

Students develop their personal practice while continuing their courses and workshops, and initiate a reflection in dialogue with their work through their thesis, as well as a collective reflection through the organization of initiation to research seminars.

RADIAN (PhD)
After obtaining the DNSEP, students can apply for the RADIAN (Research in Art, Design, Innovation, Architecture in Normandy) doctorate in artistic creation and research, carried since 2018 by ésam Caen/Cherbourg, the École supérieure d'art et design Le Havre-Rouen (ESADHaR), the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Normandie and the doctoral school 558 "History, Memory, Heritage, Language" within Normandie-Université.

Application for exchange students

To be able to apply to study at ésam Caen/Cherbourg as an exchange student, your home university must have a valid agreement with our school in your area of study. Talk with the International Office in your home university for guidance and useful information.
A dossier must be submitted to ésam International Office with the following documents :

Life in Caen

Application for international students

If you wish to study at ésam Caen/Cherbourg, you have two options depending on your situation :
• You wish to enter the first year of studies : you must comply with the common rules for all applicants and pass the entrance exam. For more information, please check the Admission page.
• You wish to enter another year of studies : you can apply through Campus Art, or directly to the school's commissions. If your application is accepted, you will be contacted for a phone interview.
Foreign students should have a minimum level of B2 (DELF, TCF or sworn statement).

Accommodation

Halls of residence :
CROUS (Centre Régional des Oeuvres Universitaires et Sociales) provides rooms or small apartments in student's halls of residence. Esam has a yearly booking for 9 square meters' rooms in the résidence Grémillon in Hérouville-saint-Clair. These rooms have a private bathroom and common kitchen. The rent is 280€ per month. If you are interested in this solution you need to contact the international office : ri@esam-c2.fr
If you would like to book another CROUS hall of residence, you can do so starting July 11th on the CROUS website, but be aware that accommodation is not guaranteed since international students do not have priority.

Private accommodation :
You can check ads on websites such as Lokaviz and contact directly the landlords.
You can also contact the "Erasmus Student Network Caen".
The Esam Caen/Cherbourg Community Facebook group can publish ads.
The Etudiants de Caen Facebook group.
There are also private halls of residence.

French courses

All courses at ésam Caen/Cherbourg are taught in French.
The Language training department of the University of Caen provides all year long French language programs designed to meet all needs and levels : full-time and part-time training, evening classes, upgrade courses before the academic year, summer courses, DELF/DALF certification.
The evening classes cost 120€ per semester (to be paid by the students).

Erasmus and Internationals in Caen also allows foreign students to practice French through their mentoring system and multilingual meetings.

DUEF for art studies purpose

ésam Caen/Cherbourg and the University of Caen have developed a joint one-year preparatory programme in order to prepare foreign students for Art studies in French.

Candidates are selected on the basis of their study project and are preregistered both for the preparatory training (DUEF - Diplôme Universitaire d'Etudes Françaises) and for immersion at ésam Caen/Cherbourg. They must justify an acquired A2 level of French at the time of registration.
During the DUEF, the students follow French courses in order to reach the B2 level (as required by the French universities) as well as “French for art studies purposes” modules. These modules prepare the students for future art courses by developing their language skills in accordance with the studies at ésam Caen/Cherbourg and by proposing progressive periods of immersion in the school. At the end of the preparatory year, provided they succeed, students are awarded the DUEF for both B1 and B2 levels and they can pass the entrance exams for ésam Caen/Cherbourg.

Students timetables are accessible here (French only).

Students workrooms are open from Monday to Thursday from 8h30 to 22h and on Friday from 8h30 to 20h.

Technical workshops are open from 8h30 to 12h30 and 13h30 to 18h30 (17h30 on Friday). The IT room (on Floor 1) is accessible in self-service from 8h30 to 22h (20h on Friday).
In order to work on a personal project in a technical workshop you should make an appointment with the technician.

The students organization was created by students in order to allow the purchase of material at a lower price. Parties, exhibitions and sales are also organized by the students so that they can show their work inside and outside the school. Contact : asso.etudiants@esam-c2.fr

Pour pouvoir postuler en tant qu'étudiant·e en échange, votre établissement d'origine doit avoir signé un accord bilatéral avec l'ésam Caen/Cherbourg. Pour plus d'informations, renseignez-vous auprès du service des relations internationales de votre établissement.

Pour pouvoir intégrer l'ésam Caen/Cherbourg, il y a deux possibilités selon votre situation :

Vous souhaitez intégrer la première année d'études : vous devez suivre la procédure d'admission commune à tou·te·s les étudiant·e·s, via la plateforme Parcoursup : plus d'informations.
Vous souhaitez postuler pour une admission en cours de cursus : vous pouvez vous inscrire pour nos commissions d'admissions, ou passer par la plateforme Campus Art. Si votre candidature est retenue, vous serez contacté·e pour un entretien téléphonique.

Les candidat·es étrangers·gères doivent fournir un certificat DELF ou TCF B2 minimum, ou une attestation sur l'honneur de la maîtrise niveau de langue française B2.

Logement

Résidences universitaires :

Le CROUS (Centre Régional des Oeuvres Universitaires et Sociales), propose des hébergements en résidences universitaires. L'ésam bénéficie d'un contingent de chambres confort dans la résidence Grémillon, à Hérouville-saint-Clair. Ces chambres disposent de salles de bain privatives et cuisines communes. Si vous êtes intéressé·e par une autre résidence universitaire du CROUS, vous pouvez postuler à partir du 11 juillet sur le site internet du CROUS mais il faut savoir que les étudiant·e·s internationaux·ales ne sont pas prioritaires donc il n'y a pas de garantie d'obtenir un logement.

Vous pouvez consulter les annonces publiées sur des sites internet comme Lokaviz, et contacter directement les propriétaires.

Apprendre le français

Tous les cours proposés à l'ésam Caen/Cherbourg sont dispensés en français.
Pour améliorer votre niveau de français, le département Formations en langue de l'Université de Caen propose des formations et des diplômes adaptés à tous les besoins : Diplôme Universitaire d'Etudes Françaises, cours internationaux d'été, soutien linguistique, examens du DELF et du DALF.
Le tarif des cours de soutien linguistique est de 120€ par semestre (à votre charge).

L'association Erasmus and Internationals in Caen propose également aux étudiant·es étrangers·gères de pratiquer le français via un système de parrainage et de cafés polyglottes.

DUEF objectif école d'art

L'ésam Caen/Cherbourg et l'Université de Caen ont développé un programme conjoint d'une durée d'un an, à destination des étudiant·e·s étrangers·gères qui souhaitent intégrer une école d'art française.
Les candidat·e·s sont sélectionné·e·s sur la base de leur projet d'études et s'inscrivent pour le DUEF (Diplôme Universitaire d'Etudes Françaises) et pour une immersion à l'ésam Caen/Cherbourg. Ils·elles doivent justifier d'un niveau de français A2 au moment de leur inscription.

Pendant cette année d'études, les étudiant·es suivent des cours de français dans l'objectif d'atteindre le niveau B2 (requis par les écoles françaises) ainsi que des modules de « Français avec objectif d'études en Art » et des sessions d'immersion progressive à l'ésam Caen/Cherbourg. Ces modules préparent les étudiant·es pour leurs futures études, en leur permettant de développer la maîtrise des processus linguistiques nécessaires à la poursuite d'études supérieures en Art.

À la fin de cette année de préparation, sous réserve de réussite, les étudiant·es obtiennent les certifications de niveau B1 et B2 du DUEF et peuvent passer les épreuves d'inscription à l'ésam Caen/Cherbourg.

In the frame of the "Saison France-Roumanie", with the support of the French Institute and the Normandy Region, ésam Caen/Cherbourg and Spațiu Intact art center in Cluj-Napoca have organised the presentation of the work of five French artists (Louise Aleksiejew, Thomas Auriol, Leticia Martínez Pérez, Antoines Medes, Léa Tesson) and five Romanian artists (Mircea But, Andrei Ispas, SJ Revo Kim, Cristian Opriș, Lucian Popăilă). "Papanache Camembert" exhibition took place in ésam Caen/Cherbourg gallery from November 30th to December 21st, 2018 and "Camembert Papanache" in the gallery of Spatiu Intact art center in Cluj-Napoca from May 7th to June 10th, 2019. Carried out by artists/academics Florin Ștefan and Benjamin Hochart, this project aimed at showing the vivacity and, to a certain extent, the artistic coherence between the French and the Romanian scene.

Partnership with Bubahof, Prague

Since 2018, ésam Caen/Cherbourg has a partnership with Bubahof organization, located in Prague, in order to foster students mobility as well as international experience for graduates and cultural and artistic projects involving research. On a yearly basis, Bubahof provides an accommodation and a working space in its premises for artists, researchers, curators and staff from ésam Caen/Cherbourg.

Short residencies:

In 2018-2019, the following people stayed at Bubahof for a short residency : Maria Giovanni, Cyprien Desrez, Lou Parisot, Emile Orange, Enora Bource, Izypt, Justine Viard, Marion Phalip and Emilien Blanchard.

Yearly call for applications:

Launched in 2018, this artistic residency offers a chance for a young graduate of ésam Caen/Cherbourg to spend three months (July-September) in Prague thanks to Bubahof association and MeetFactory art center.

"Artist in Residence" Normandy/Hordaland

Based upon the 25-year old collaborative partnership between Normandie region and Hordaland County Council, a residency program has been developed with ésam Caen/Cherbourg and Bergen School of Art and Design in order to promote young graduates abroad.
Each year the program alternates between sending a young French artist to Norway and a young Norwegian artist to France, for a three-month residency supported by Normandy and Hordaland.

"Artist in Residence" Normandie/Manitoba

Based on the Normandy/Hordaland model, this program was launched in 2016 with ésam Caen/Cherbourg and Brandon University, supported by Normandie region and the Manitoba Arts Council.
